The 2014 Mountain Mama Hospice Regatta

The Sewell Mountain Sailing Association is pleased to announce the fourth annual Mountain Mama Hospice Regatta, celebrating and supporting Hospice of Southern West Virginia.

The Aug. 23-24 event on Summersville Lake draws sailing enthusiasts to the Mountain State to help raise money to provide compassionate care to hundreds of people each year in their final days of life.

The regatta has raised more than $30,000 since 2011 for Hospice of Southern West Virginia, with sailboats of several sizes and classes competing, entrants from as far away as Florida and the Canadian province of Alberta.

While there is no fee for entry, sailors and onlookers are strongly encouraged to contribute to this worthy cause.

Hospice serves the needs of the terminally ill and their families. Hospice of Southern West Virginia services are provided primarily in the home, but may be carried out at long-term care facilities, personal care homes or at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

This is a family-friendly event, well supported by local and regional businesses and community groups, with food, awards, music and raffles at the beach and picnic area near the Battle Run boat ramps.

Registration form, Notice Of Race, Association Membership, etc. will be available soon for download from the "Documents" page area ... If you have trouble, look us up on Facebook, where we're the only Sewell Mountain Sailing Association of West Virginia. We'll post the same documents there.

                  "Mountain Mama Hospice Regatta"

I know, from the many regattas I have attended over the years, making a call  on what regattas to attend , can be problematic. The costs for entry donation, travel, overnight stays, etc. all add up. What are the conditions, with respect to water, winds, docks, ramps, come to mind as well. So I will try to answer as many of these questions as I can on this page... We will start with a few shots of what "Divers Magazine" calls the Little Bahamas of the eastern US..

Remember, your total costs to attend are tax deductible ...  And you can count yourself as one of the first sailors to take part in this unique Regatta !

                         Known as Jump Rock

At about the halfway point of the run, Jump Rock to the locals, is a much photographed site along the way.

One of the many waterfalls along the course. Water depths this close can be from 10 to 50 feet deep, very clean and clear water.

Ramp areas - 5 in total (4 within about 1/4 mile ) of the Start/Finish line.

The Start/Finish area, along with part of the Short course for novices and juniors,  can be seen in the background. Our committee boat is also shown here.

At "Battle Run," the staging point for the event, you'll find two very nice ramps and docks (approximately 100 yards apart), plenty of parking, and restrooms. Ramp fees are $3.

The I-19 Bridge, Make U-Turn Here (at the mark) and head for the Finish Line

When you round this bridge (mark not seen here), you're off to the S/F line with a boat full of memories. Remember to bring a camera ...

                               The Beach Area

It's clean, sandy, protected from boats, and has its own bathrooms. Cost - Free (next to ramps, but separated by a small island of woods.) This will be a fine place to watch the start and the junior course.

Babcock State Park - One of the last operational Grist Mills still in use.

This was taken in mid winter. With only a short drive from the venue, You can enjoy this wonder of times gone by.
